Case Study: A Holistic Approach to Learning ‘Degh Tegh Fateh’ Through Student Filmmaking and Design

Our previous post discussed the transformative potential of integrating visual storytelling into Sikh education. Today, we’re thrilled to share an inspiring case study from our local Khalsa School that showcases the holistic learning opportunities provided by the Nishkam TV program.

The Project: Degh Tegh Fateh: The Hidden Values

A group of young Sikh students embarked on a multifaceted project to explore the deep meaning behind the phrase “Degh Tegh Fateh” – a concept they hear daily in Ardaas but may not fully understand. This project stands out because of its comprehensive approach, combining filmmaking, graphic design, and hands-on learning experiences.

Part 1: The Script – Bringing ‘Degh’ to Life

The students created a short film script titled “Degh Tegh Fateh: The Hidden Values – Part 1: Degh.” This creative narrative weaves together several elements:

  1. Modern Setting: The story unfolds in a present-day Gurdwara, making it relatable to young Sikhs.
  2. Interactive Storytelling: A scavenger hunt plot engages characters and viewers in active problem-solving.
  3. Educational Content: As characters solve clues, they learn about various aspects of Gurdwara life and Sikh practices.
  4. Focus on ‘Degh’: The script explores the concept of ‘Degh’ through the process of making Karah Prashad.
  5. Character Development: The story showcases teamwork and growing understanding among young characters.

Part 2: Visual Design – Creating the Movie Poster

Taking their project a step further, the students applied their newly acquired knowledge to create a striking movie poster. This exercise reinforced their understanding of “Degh Tegh Fateh” and helped them develop valuable graphic design skills.

The poster design process involved:

  1. Conceptualization: Students brainstormed ideas to represent “Degh Tegh Fateh visually.”
  2. Hands-on Experience: They created the central image by using actual Karah Prashad in a Degh (communal cooking pot) and a Kirpan (sword).
  3. Photography: Students learned basic photography skills to capture the arranged elements.
  4. Digital Editing: Using graphic design software, they enhanced the image and added text to complete the poster.

This poster powerfully represents the concept, blending traditional Sikh symbols with modern design aesthetics.

Holistic Learning Outcomes

Through this comprehensive project, students gained a wide range of skills and knowledge:

  1. Scriptwriting and Storytelling: Crafting a narrative that’s both entertaining and educational.
  2. Filmmaking: Learning about camera work, directing, and acting.
  3. Graphic Design: Developing visual composition, typography, and digital editing skills.
  4. Photography: Understanding the basics of lighting, composition, and photo editing.
  5. Teamwork and Collaboration: Working together on various aspects of the project.
  6. Time Management: Balancing different project components and meeting deadlines.
  7. Research Skills: Deepening their understanding of Sikh concepts and practices.
  8. Presentation Skills: Preparing to showcase their work to the Sangat.

The Impact of This Holistic Approach

By engaging in this multifaceted project, the students:

  • Developed a Deeper Understanding: The varied activities reinforced their learning about “Degh Tegh Fateh” from different angles.
  • Acquired Practical Skills: They gained experience in filmmaking and graphic design, which are valuable skills in today’s digital world.
  • Enhanced Creativity: The project allowed students to express their understanding through various creative mediums.
  • Improved Critical Thinking: They had to analyze how best to represent complex concepts visually and narratively.
  • Increased Engagement: The hands-on, creative nature of the project kept students highly engaged throughout the learning process.
  • Created Lasting Resources: Both the film and the poster can be used as educational tools for years to come.
